Beauty And The Beast Will Introduce Disney's First Gay Character!

Disney, while typically embracing a more "traditional" prince/princess model, has slowly been creeping into the 21st century by introducing characters with more modern traits.  Frozen showcased a woman out to save herself instead of being rescued by a man.  Maleficent gave us the backstory that Sleeping Beauty left out, giving us a whole new perspective of the "evil" witch.  And Big Hero 6 intrigued us with Disney's first Japanese-American characters.

Now, Disney's crossing into new (for them) territory - they are introducing a gay storyline in the 2017 live action version of Beauty and the Beast starring Emma Watson.

It's already been announced that the character of Belle, who is portrayed by Watson, is trading in her ballet slippers for riding boots to appear more feminist.

But Disney's leaving Belle's love story with the Beast pretty much the same, and giving another character the new love interest...

LeFou, played by Josh Gad, will have Disney's first 'Exclusively Gay Moment'

If you can't remember LeFou from the animated classic, he is Gaston's manservant.

The moment will come when LeFou struggles with his feelings for Gaston, Belle's obnoxious suiter.

Director Bill Condon revealed that “LeFou is somebody who on one day wants to be Gaston and on another day wants to kiss Gaston.”

He went on to say “He’s confused about what he wants. It’s somebody who’s just realizing that he has these feelings. And Josh makes something really subtle and delicious out of it. And that’s what has its payoff at the end, which I don’t want to give away. But it is a nice, exclusively gay moment in a Disney movie.”

We can't wait to see this new take on the classic character!
