An Online Game Called “Blue Whale” May Be Connected To Teenage Suicides In Russia

An online computer game called Blue Whale is being investigated for links to 130 suicides in Russia over the last six months. During the game, players need to complete 50 tasks which can be “deadly.” Here are the details.

Russian police are investigating a computer game and related social media posts linked to 130 youngsters committing suicide.

Shown in the photo, 16 year-old teenager Veronika Volkova committed suicide in an apartment complex in the Irkutsk area.

Yulia, a 15-year-old friend of Veronika, also killed herself after posting “The End” and shared a blue whale photo on her page.

Veronika shared “Sense is lost… End” and committed suicide. Her last posts were "Do you feel that gradually you become useless?"  and “I'm just a ghost.”

Yulia and Veronika's tragic deaths are looked at as they are a part of a chain of suicides.

Only two days before the incident happened, a 14-year-old teenage girl jumped on the rails to kill herself in the city of Chita, Siberian Times reports.

Transport police verified that the suicide is related to the computer game named The Blue Whale.

Last year, another Russian paper reported that 130 suicides that were committed between November 2015 and April 2016 were all linked to the same online pages.

All these teenagers lived in happy families with good income.

Russian Committee of Investigation started investigating the possibility of “incitement to suicide” and told that they would focus on the social media ties.

2 young males were taken into custody after allegedly video-recording double suicides.

The police will soon begin a vast investigation. 21-year-old Philip Budeikin was taken into custody after being accused of being the leader of this suicide game and forming 8 different suicide groups.

Allegedly, players complete game tasks and end up killing themselves.

Russian media claims that Blue Whale plants the seeds of suicide in young people. For example,  the game shows a reaching train and “This world is not for us” message appears on the screen.

Other than that the caption reads “We are the children of the dead generation” under the photo of young people on top of a building.

For example, the players are told to draw a whale on their arms.

The game's social media account asks: “How many dull days like this are you going to drag yourself through?”

They are also urged to watch horror movies all day, and to wake themselves at 4:20 am. All steps leading up to demands to take their own lives on the 50th day in the game.

The inquiries about the game and its social media accounts will be a matter of controversy for a while.
