The 10 Best Songs To Up Your Mood, Chosen By Scientists!

 > -

Need an instant musical uplift? Dr. Jacob Jolij, a cognitive neuroscientist at the University of Groningen came up with a formula to find out what kind of songs can really (scientifically) up your mood! "The formula I came up with takes the number of positive lyrical elements in a song, and divides that by how much a song deviates from 150 bpm and from the major key," he says. So here are the 10  best songs that will boost your mood, according to a neuroscientist!

1. Queen - Don't Stop Me Now

I think there should be more songs from Queen in this list, but Jolij says this one is what you need: “Tonight I'm gonna have myself a real good time. I feel alive and the world it's turning inside out Yeah!”.

2. Abba - Dancing Queen

Well you may think American disco music has died ages ago, but your brain probably won’t agree. Just give it a shot.

3. The Beach Boys - Good Vibrations

What can boost your energy more than a song titled “Good Vibrations”? It has everything you could ever ask for!

4. Billy Joel - Uptown Girl

Billy Joel wrote this for Christie Brinkley, whom he married. He was the backstreet guy, and she was the Uptown Girl. Then their marriage went up-down, but don’t let this personal story bring you down. The song stays the same. That’s what matters.

5. Survivor - Eye Of The Tiger

When it’s time to feel the thrill of the fight, it’s time to play this song’s into! No wonder every NBA arena plays it almost every night, those guys know how to get you excited scientifically.

6. The Monkees - I'm A Believer

“Then I saw her face, now I'm a believer

Not a trace of doubt in my mind.

I'm in love, I'm a believer!”
There you go, boy.

7. Cyndi Lauper - Girls Just Want To Have Fun

It’s almost like an anthem for every girl out there tired of your sh*t, people.

8. Bon Jovi - Livin' On A Prayer

Hope is what you need. Hope is what this song will give you.

9. Gloria Gaynor - I Will Survive

“I'd like to do more than survive I'd like to rub it in your face” Amanda Fucking Palmer says. That’s exactly what Gloria does.

10. Katrina & The Waves - Walking On Sunshine

This is a song about a woman waiting for a letter to tell her that her lover is arriving. It seems that the mere anticipation creates uplift. Like the other songs in this list, it’s not the success that will give you the uplift, it’s the anticipatory buzz that’ll do it for you!
