Every Historical Reference in American Horror Story: NYC
If there was ever such a thing as an American Horror Story, it would be New York in 1981. From the first shot of the first episode of the season, we see an unrecognizable metropolis, free of the gentrified apartments, coffee shops, overpriced restaurants, and the air of controlled cleanliness that most of us have come to expect. The sidewalks were lined with walls of trash bags, palettes, and cardboard boxes. Rats would flit back and forth, feeding on the rotting filth that had spread a horrific stench throughout the island. It was a bloody time. The murder rate was higher by orders of magnitudes. There were 120,000 reported robberies and probably 120,000 more that had gone unnoticed. Nearly everyone had a tale about how they were violated, beaten, or mugged. This was largely due to the crack epidemic, a rabid feeding frenzy that brought lines of cars into the ghetto, like demented drive-thrus. It had turned the city's inhabitants into a vicious pack of wolves. They'd do anything to satisfy their monolithic cravings--go door to door, break into buildings, cars, anything that was left unlocked or unprotected. They traveled in packs, taking over subway cars, alleyways, and abandoned buildings--anywhere they could get high, rest their heads, then prepare for more. It's the city of legend, a symbol of a world gone wrong. It no longer exists, but its stain has seeped into the shallow fabric of our collective unconscious, leaving behind the smell of rotting garbage, and visions of mohawks, graffiti, and switchblades. It's simply too vile and too horrific to be washed away. New York will never live that reputation down. The island has been tainted with it.

Who is the Serial Killer in American Horror Story: NYC?
Warning: This article contains spoilers for the first two episodes of American Horror Story: NYC, which aired October 19, 2022. 'Do you know what it feels like to have hot needles hammered into your nail beds? It feels like an injection of flame, an incineration of every nerve in your body, shooting inward from your fingertips. I was abducted last night. Someone drugged me, tied me up, tortured me--held a blade to my heart. I was held captive for hours. I don't know who did this to me, but I am certain that our boys in blue know that a killer is preying on and butchering gay men in Lower Manhattan.' -Gino Barelli, AHS: NYCIn the premiere of AHS: NYC, we're introduced to a New York owned by the people, not the gentrified few. We've all seen it in films. Bums filled the alleyways, building cardboard lean-tos, warming themselves with trash can fires. Punks armed with switchblades roamed the streets, and ten foot high walls of garbage lined the sidewalks, filling the island with a horrific stench. The gay community at that time was a buffet. Everyone was obsessed with the forbidden fruit. They'd crowd warehouses, cruise parks, stalk piers, and frequent bath houses and bars. Nobody cared about them. Nobody wanted them. They were lost and abandoned, so when they came to the police to tell them about a killer on the loose, it was no surprise that the cops refused to listen.

Death is Our Dinner Companion In 'American Horror Story: NYC'
Warning: This article contains spoilers for the first two episodes of 'American Horror Story: NYC', which aired October 19, 2022. Stella came into the community center every day wearing giant church hats and silky sundresses, smelling of Swisher Sweets. She had the face of Archie Bunker, but she moved with the grace of a true lady. She'd sit in the computer room, making use of the free internet while a never-ending round of young men and women came bustling in and out causing drama. We'd often trade looks and roll our eyes as they raided the condom bowl at the front desks and snuck tricks into the bathroom. Their haggard look, track marks, and pockmarked faces spoke volumes. I saw them as black holes, devouring everything they could--sex, meth, heroin, crack; they lived to fill themselves up.  I was a young high school student trying to do my homework, and the community center had the closest computer lab. They also had a giant library filled with radical gay literature and more than a few books on Stonewall, a personal obsession of mine. One day, I was sitting in the back, ignoring everything around me when I heard a deep voice with a thick New York accent. 'Well aren't you just the fruitiest thing that ever existed?' I looked up to see Stella giving me a vulgar smile. 'You know I was there,' she said, pointing at my book. The conversation that ensued stuck with me for years to come. Not one word of it could be verified, but if she was lying she definitely knew her stuff. She named restaurants and bars, and events that occurred during the riots--stuff I could verify in books and internet searches. She even had detailed stories about the locals in Greenwich Village. She said the historical figures in those books were just like the kids at the community center: blackholes. It's understandable. When the world hates you, and they won't house you or employ you, then you're going to hustle and do drugs. These weren't just lost. They were abandoned, so they feasted on everything they could, and then their world crumbled. Everyone she knew was dead. Death became their dinner companion.

The Handmaid's Tale: Serena Joy Doesn't Deserve Our Sympathy
Warning: This post contains spoilers for season 5 episode 7 'No Man's Land,' which aired October 19, 2022. Blessed be the fruit loops!'The Handmaid's Tale' has a way of catching the audience off guard. My first shocker moment was a few months before the show was released when I was refreshing my browser every few minutes for updates. I was certain that they would screw it up somehow, remove the theocratic elements or underfund it. There are certain subjects that Hollywood avoids, and Margaret Atwood's novel contained all of them. When I saw the picture of Yvonne Strahovski, I was furious. The Serena that I loved was played by the legendary Faye Dunaway in the 1990 film, and Strahovski was nothing like her. I wanted twisted TBN, snake-eyes, and 3-foot-high curls--someone intimidating and absurd. Instead, they gave us a stock photo model with whitened teeth. She belonged in a Gap window display, not a theocratic dictatorship. I took to social media to air my grievances. I thought the rest of the fanbase would agree with me. But they saw something I didn't. Serena was a political pundit who helped win the hearts and minds of the nation. She was supposed to subtle and deceptive. People would look at her and think she was some gluten-free college graduate that studied Buddhism and took yoga classes--not a vicious wife with a beating cane and a handmaid confined to her room. It made sense.
