10 of the Best 'American Horror Story' Characters So Far
Warning this article contains spoilers for American Horror Story Seasons 1-9. 'American Horror Story' has gone to great lengths to make sure we remember everyone that strut their stage. They scoured talent agencies, hunting down extraordinary individuals, many with rare conditions, granting them dignity, affection, and grace. They employed some of the world's greatest actors--men and women who could send chills down the spines of the world, and they challenged them to push past their comfort zones. The writing was groundbreaking. They brought us into the minds of others, forcing us to confront every facet of the human condition. We felt every second of their vulnerability, their moments of strength, heartache, and betrayal. It was never about what happened; it was about whose path we were on, what drove them, their relationships, and their struggles in life. We were made to love, hate, laugh, and cry, and it was always while standing in someone else's shoes. Let's hear it for the covens, the freak shows, the asylum patients, and hotel guests. Let's give them their due recognition, take a moment to recognize their suffering, and let's hope a thousand more like them.
What We've Learned About Aunt Lydia in 'The Handmaid's Tale'
Warning: This article contains spoilers for season 5 episode 6 of 'The Handmaid's Tale,' which aired October 12, 2022. Blessed Be the Fruit Loops! It's become abundantly clear that 'The Handmaid's Tale' is never going to let us do things the easy way. They want us to think, translate facial expressions, and decode the quiet pauses between words. The best stuff takes time, and there's always a caveat--some moral dilemma or letdown. They'll throw us a bone, give us a win, then snatch it away the second we grab onto it. There is no victory, just a long, hard path filled with torment and suffering. But we don't mind. It's a labor of love. We'll rewatch, pause, take things in, then keep going. We'll turn on the subtitles and latch on to every word. We don't let anything--not even the background chatter--pass us by, because the closer we look, the more we learn, and there's more to 'The Handmaid's Tale' than just religion and politics. Behind that icy shell of a world, there's love, vulnerability, compassion, and a constant struggle for freedom--not just from Gilead, but from their beliefs and their ways of thinking.
Can We Trust Commander Lawrence in 'The Handmaid's Tale'?
Warning: This article contains spoilers for 'The Handmaid's Tale' season 5 episode 6 'Together,' which aired October 12, 2022.Writers talk a lot about creating three-dimensional characters. We'll have imaginary conversations with them, sit down with them, and try to understand who they are. They can't just be good guys or bad guys, and they can't be based on a single personality trait. They should live within the nuance, just like people in the real world. But readers don't want nuanced characters. That's not how humans think. They puzzle us. We'll spend hours trying to figure them out and categorize them, bashing a square peg into a circular hole. Writers compensate by becoming portrait painters, fixing crooked noses, adding in a touch of beauty or malice--something the readers can use to find out which label they deserve. If most writers are painters, 'The Handmaid's Tale' was created by photographers. They don't care about good or bad. They give us reality, and they tell us to take it or leave it. That's exactly what they did with Commander Joseph Lawrence. He is guilty of horrific crimes, but there's more to him--infinite shades of light and dark, and his intentions aren't easy to understand. He always seems to be on the fence, playing the field--lying and scheming, but for what? What does Joseph really want? Can we trust him?

Who Are the Bene Gesserit and What Part MIght They Play in 'Dune: The Sisterhood'?
Everything about the Bene Gesserit sisterhood is designed to intrigue the reader. They exist in a realistic universe, confined by the same laws of physics and reasoning as our own. But through sheer will and discipline, they've managed to bend those rules, gaining seemingly supernatural abilities in the process. They've been called psychics, priestesses, witches, and mediums, but none of those things are true. They are the great manipulators, masters of the human mind, the overseers of society, always close by but never fully understood. They kept their mysteries cloaked in rituals and ancient encrypted texts. We knew very little about where they came from. We had heard rumors of a matriarchal society that had sprung up on old Terra countless eons before the events of Frank Herbert's Dune. There were contradictory legends of a group of sorceresses, who had come from another planet filled with poisonous jungles. The nature of their reverend mothers, leaders within the sect, was also a mystery. Some said they were mutants, carrying a specific gene that allowed them to dip into an enhanced state of mind. But in the original novel, Paul Atreides and his mother Jessica were able to attain this state after learning how to subdue a poison that originated from Arrakis. Some of these myths can be decoded and thrown out, but the sisters will always have their secrets, even from the audience.
