June Osborne and Embracing the Darkness in 'The Handmaid's Tale'
I admit i didn't read this article very carefully, because what I did read was just plain wrong in its assumptions. When the writer stated that June bought the lie about Frances, and "put her back" into pulling the gallows rope -- totally wrong. She didn't buy the lie, she knew better than anyone what the whole thing was really about. She pulled hard on the rope to help Frances die quickly, the only thing she could do for her.
June did not "refuse to help Eleanor." Did she know she needed to protect Angel's Flight? Yes, but that was only part of it. She had seen up close how Eleanor was struggling, and that without the meds she needed, Eleanor only had a slow downward spiral ahead of her. Eleanor knew what was she doing; she knew she was a danger and was not going to get any better, so she chose to make her exit. June was respecting Eleanor's decision, but not dragging her back into a miserable, painful life without hope.
Not a well thought-out article.
