We Lost Another Childhood Hero: 'SpongeBob SquarePants' Creator Stephen Hillenburg Passed Away!


The creator of Nickelodeon cartoon series ''SpongeBob SquarePants'', Stephen Hillenburg died at 57.

The network announced that the man who used his marine biology background to create wildly popular cartoon series ''SpongeBob SquarePants'' has died from ALS, he was 57.

"We are incredibly saddened by the news that Steve Hillenburg has passed away following a battle with ALS," a Nickelodeon spokesperson said.

Hillenburg revealed that he was diagnosed with ALS but vowed to continue working on the TV show.

The show was first aired in May 1999 and running since then. ALS, (Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis) is a neurodegenerative disease that affects cells in the brain and spinal cord.

He studied marine biology in college and drawing was his passion.

"The art part of me, it came easy," he said. "The research and studying for (marine biology) was much harder, and I never really saw the two of them coming together."

Farewell, Bikini Bottom will miss you dearly.
