Strong signals were received from 94 light years away.
The signals were received from a star like our sun. After a Russian telescope detected the signals 94 light years away, scientists all over the world started investigating the star. Of course, the question in our minds is “Are aliens trying to reach us?”
A Russian radio telescope was scanning for extra-terrestrial life when it found the star called HD164595 and the signals coming from its proximity. Scientists have found at least one planet orbiting the star and they stated that there could be more.
Paul Gilster, author of the website 'Centauri Dreams' states that, even though the discovery has recently been on the news, it was discovered last year by RATAN-600, another telescope in Russia. He added, “I don’t think that it is the act of aliens, but it’s worth investigating.”
This discovery is expected to be one of the main topics discussed at the International Astronautical Congress in Guadalajara, Mexico.
Glister says shat “Working out the strength of the signal, the researchers say that if it came from an isotropic beacon, it would be of a power possible only for a Kardashev Type II civilization.” This is a scale named after Russian astronomer Nikolay Kardashev and it indicates how advanced the civilizations are. This would be a more advanced civilization than ours.
Texas A&M University astronomer Nick Suntzeff said; “I would not be surprised if the signal was due to a terrestrial origin because it was observed in part of the radio spectrum used by the military.” He added, “God knows who or what broadcasts at 11Ghz.”
Douglas Vakoch, Another astronomer, and president of METI International, which searches for life beyond Earth, told CNN; "The signal from HD 164595 is intriguing, because it comes from the vicinity of a sun-like star, and if it's artificial, its strength is great enough that it was clearly made by a civilization with capabilities beyond those of humankind."
