How Did We Forget Just How Villainous This 'Game of Thrones' Character Was?
In the vibrant world of Game of Thrones, there were characters who earned everyone's disdain. Enter a character that perfectly fits this category: Viserys Targaryen. He was unbelievably egotistical, shockingly cruel, and the epitome of various malevolences that you wouldn't expect from a sibling. So, how did this character fade into oblivion? The answer 👇
Game of Thrones is an HBO series adapted from George R.R. Martin's epic fantasy novel series "A Song of Ice and Fire".
In the complex world of Game of Thrones, there are characters who are easy to hate, for example, Tywin Lannister (Charles Dance), who mistreats his own son, or Walder Frey (David Bradley), who arouses no admiration.
As the son of kings, Viserys considers himself the rightful ruler of Westeros and does not hesitate to do everything to claim what he deserves.
As the second son of the mad king in the TV series "Game of Thrones", Viserys grew up having everything he wanted and later in life had the feeling of searching for his right.
However, his condition changed during 'Game of Thrones' and he couldn't cope with it. Unlike Daenerys, who was content to live in the free City of Pentos as the guest of Illyrio (Roger Allam), Viserys had his eyes set on returning to Westeros and killing everyone who kept 'Usurper' Robert Baratheon (Mark Addy) on the throne. In Robert's Rebellion, Viserys lost everything: his position, his parents, his brother and his house. Forced to flee for their lives, five-year-old Viserys and baby Daenerys lived in poverty in the hope of finding a place and raising an army to reclaim their home. Viserys' past has given him dreams of greatness and led him to believe that he is as great as his holy brother Rhaegar (Wilf Scolding), although he has never shown the same abilities. Viserys behaves like a ruler even when he has no power and gets angry even when he is not obeyed. But the worst thing about him is that he is much more than just looking for his right. Dec.
As brothers, most people expect there to be a bond between Viserys and Daenerys, especially since they are the last members of the Targaryen family and Decked out a lot together in their childhood, but this is not the case.
Due to his lack of power over everything else, Viserys ruthlessly shows his power over Daenerys. With only his sister left, he aims to get an army by selling her to the Dothraki Khal Drogo (Jason Momoa). Marriage alliances are not unusual, but the way Viserys talks about it goes beyond that. She claims that Daenerys' marriage will be the beginning of her reign and agrees that if it benefits her, she will let worse things happen to her. However, this is just the beginning of his bad behavior to Daenerys.
As the eldest of the surviving Targaryen brothers and the only male, Viserys has power over his sister and exploits it.
Arranging a marriage that he doesn't want is the least of his crimes. In his introduction, it is immediately clear that he does not have a healthy relationship with his sister. Although incest is common among them, Daenerys is clearly disturbed by their actions, which proves the existence of sexual abuse on some levels. Later in the series, he is beaten by Viserys when Daenerys gives him an order. At that point, Daenerys gained self-confidence in her position as Khaleesi and defended herself, but this implies the presence of physical violence in the past. Viserys also threatens Daenerys several times. Since he is quite prone to tantrums, he calls it a 'dragon'. When he does something Daenerys doesn't like, she warns him to avoid releasing the dragon. While personifying her anger is a sign of the madness prevalent among Targaryens, Daenerys' fear of the threat indicates her Decadence. Viserys has no love for his own sister, his only interest is to enjoy being stronger than her.
Viserys has earned a place as one of the cruelest villains on Game of Thrones, but he only appears for less than a season and dies in the sixth episode, so it's also easy to forget.
That doesn't give him much time to make a lasting impression on the audience, especially considering everything that happened at that point. But he also has one of the more memorable deaths. Khal Drogo gives Viserys his crown by pouring molten gold on his head and calls him 'taj'. This is one of the first deaths in the brutal series, even before the murder of Ned Stark (Sean Bean). His death happens so early and, let's face it, because he didn't accomplish anything, it doesn't have the same effect of Viserys. While the audience hates him, his death happens so early that it would be easy to forget his cruelty given everything in the series. However, Viserys is as evil as the most hated characters of Game of Thrones.
