The History of the Ayder Plateau

The History of the Ayder Plateau

The origin of the Ayder Plateau goes back to the nomadic lifestyle of the Hamshen people in the region for centuries. Since the 13th century, this region has become an important plateau where the communities living around the Hala Creek, in particular, spend the summer months. The transhumance culture is a temporary way of life established by the local people, who make a living from animal husbandry, by migrating to cooler and more fertile high-altitude regions in the summer season.

Ayder Plateau has been one of the centres where this nomadic culture is experienced most vividly. The region, which has been known for the healing effects of its hot springs since the 1700s, has become a frequent destination not only for local people but also for guests from the surrounding provinces.

In addition, traditional celebrations such as ‘Hodoç Festivities’ have been going on since ancient times. In these events, folk dances performed in local clothes, horons accompanied by kemençe, bullfights and highland fairs are quite remarkable. Today, this cultural heritage is still kept alive in festivals and festivities organised in the summer months.

The unique nature of Ayder Plateau makes it not only a holiday destination but also a natural habitat. The plateau is located within the borders of Kaçkar Mountains National Park and is therefore rich in endemic species. Its forests are densely populated with spruce, beech, hornbeam and chestnut trees. Rhododendrons, rhododendrons (azaleas), wild strawberries and yellow crocuses, which are unique to the Caucasian flora, turn nature into a riot of colours in spring and summer.

Wildlife species such as brown bears, lynxes, roe deer, mountain goats, wild boars and foxes can be seen in this unique nature. The region is also an important stopping point for migratory birds. Ayder Plateau and its surroundings offer unique opportunities for nature lovers who want to do bird watching.

Waterfalls are among the most fascinating natural wonders of Ayder. Bride Tülü Waterfall, which is the most famous one, has taken this name with its image floating like a thin veil from the foot of the mountain. Tar Waterfall, Palovit Waterfall, and Upper and Lower Ambarlık Waterfalls are among the other important points to be seen during nature walks.

Hot Springs of the Ayder Plateau

Hot Springs of the Ayder Plateau

One of the most important natural riches of the Ayder Plateau is undoubtedly the hot water springs. Emerging from a depth of 260 metres, the thermal water with a temperature of approximately 55 °C is very valuable in terms of health due to its high mineral content. It is known to be good for rheumatic diseases, musculoskeletal disorders, skin diseases and digestive system disorders.

These thermal waters have been integrated with modern facilities and made suitable for both individual and family use. Especially private baths, indoor thermal pools and outdoor stone baths offer a relaxing experience to visitors. However, in cases such as heart, blood pressure and pregnancy, a doctor's advice should be taken.

Some of the thermal hotels offer bungalows or boutique accommodation options intertwined with nature. Especially in the winter months, the combination of the hot spring experience and the snow-covered natural view offers a visual feast.
