The History of Bodrum Castle and Its Transformation into a Museum

The History of Bodrum Castle and Its Transformation into a Museum

Bodrum Castle was built by the Knights of St. Jean in the early 15th century. Originally called San Pietro (Petronium) Castle, its construction began in 1406 and was strengthened with various additions until 1522. The castle was used as a military base and prison during the Ottoman period.

In the 1960s, with the efforts of Cevat Şakir Kabaağaçlı (Fisherman of Halicarnassus), the General Director of Archaeology of the period, the cultural value of the castle was realised again and in 1964 it was started to be organised as the Bodrum Underwater Archaeology Museum. Today, the museum is considered one of the largest underwater archaeological museums in the world.
