A Prehistoric Journey: The History of Sebaste Ancient City
Sebaste Ancient City is an old Roman city located in Selçikler town of Sivaslı district of Usak. The city was founded in the Hellenistic Period and later became an important center during the Roman Empire. The name Sebaste means “venerable” or “national” in Greek.
The name is a reference to the Roman Emperor Augustus, who ruled the city from 27 BC to 14 AD. Emperor Augustus, who was also the founder of the city, founded Sebaste in 20 BC, one of the 12 important cities of the Roman period.

44 years after the first scientific excavations carried out by the Istanbul Archaeological Museums between 1966 and 1978, the ancient city is once again bustling with activity.
Work started in September 2023 and continued under the direction of the Usak Archaeology Museum with the scientific consultancy of faculty members of the Department of Archaeology, Faculty of Arts and Sciences, Usak University. During the works, the remains of the bathhouse were uncovered. Water pipes, i.e. funnels, the foundation stones and some of the walls of the bath were discovered. Ceramic finds from the Late Hellenistic and Early Roman Empire Periods were found.
The granariums (granaries) located to the north of the small church, one of the remarkable buildings of the city, were documented.
