History of the Ancient City of Teos: A Civilisation Founded by the Ions

History of the Ancient City of Teos: A Civilisation Founded by the Ions

Teos was founded around 1000 BC and became one of the 12 member cities of the Ionian Union (Panionion). Athamas, the son of King Kodros of Athens, is considered to be the founder. However, the history of settlement in the region dates back much further, to the Late Bronze Age.

In time, it came under many sovereignties such as Persians, Alexander the Great, Pergamon Kingdom and Rome. Teos, an important port and cultural city in every period, has been a centre where philosophers, poets, architects and jurists were trained.

City of Dionysus: Mythology and Teos

City of Dionysus: Mythology and Teos

The ancient city of Teos is especially associated with Dionysus, the god of wine, in ancient sources. This relationship is based not only on mythological but also on a practical basis. Teos has gained a reputation for viticulture and wine production. The world's largest Temple of Dionysus, dedicated to the god Dionysus, is also located here.

The city is also known for its artists' union (Dionysiac Artists). This union includes theatre artists, musicians and writers and is considered almost the first 'professional artists' union' in Antiquity. Teos was therefore not only a harbour, but also the cradle of art and theatre.
