r/place: The Evolving Canvas of Internet Culture and Community Collaboration on Reddit

r/place is a collective project and social experiment conducted on the social network Reddit. The first experiment was carried out on April Fool's Day, 1st April 2017. After the first experiment in 2017, it was repeated for the second time on April Fool's Day, 2022, and for the third time on 20 July 2023.

Normally organized every five years, r/place had surprisingly kicked off this year as well, following the previous year's event. Open to every Reddit user, the event provides a blank canvas and the ability to place a pixel every five minutes. With the organization of the users, astonishing masterpieces and landscapes reflecting the language of the internet emerge. The canvas, bearing the marks of different communities, kept changing actively over time. So, there were many artworks that emerged on the first day of the event but couldn't survive until the last day and had to make way for others.

The experiment initiated in the subreddit 'r/place' offered a canvas where registered users could select a color from a palette of 16 colors (32 colors at the end of the 2022 experiment) and change the color of a single pixel. They were allowed to place a pixel every 5 to 20 minutes. The project was designed by Josh Wardle. The 2017 experiment was terminated by the Reddit administration 72 hours later, on 4th April 2017. More than a million users modified the canvas and placed about 16 million pixels in total. When the experiment ended, more than 90,000 users were actively editing Place. The experiment received praise for representing internet culture.

While typically set to begin on April 1, this year's event saw an unexpected start on July 20. The interactive canvas showcased a medley of creations, from cultural references and national flags to meme characters, truly exhibiting the diversity of Reddit's user base. A standout piece was a pixel art rendition of Van Gogh's 'Starry Night,' aptly named 'Pixel Van Gogh,' which gained significant recognition.

In addition to individual creativity, the event was also a platform for various social movements and communities. Users produced designs to raise awareness and initiate conversations around critical subjects such as LGBT+ rights and climate change. This exhibition of unity and collective action echoed the profound impact and potential of online communities. The resulting large-scale pixel canvas served as a testament to the myriad cultures and communities, reflecting their creativity and diversity. It underscored how these virtual spaces can harness collective energy and creativity, making a substantial impact.
