It turns out that renowned director Tim Burton had envisioned a 'Catwoman' spin-off film following the success of 'Batman Returns,' with screenwriter Daniel Waters at the helm.

Having directed 'Batman Returns' in 1992, Burton handed over the directorial reins to Joel Schumacher for the 1995 production of 'Batman Forever.'

Screenwriter Daniel Waters, who penned the script for 'Batman Returns' in 1992, recently discussed Tim Burton's concept for a 'Catwoman' spin-off in an interview.

After the considerable success of 'Batman Returns,' Burton and many fans anticipated a 'Catwoman' production with Michelle Pfeiffer in the lead role.

Warner Bros. initially began developing the project, but the film never saw the light of day.

Daniel Waters characterizes the development phase of 'Catwoman' as an unusual process. Burton and Waters had different ideas for bringing Selina Kyle to the big screen.

According to Waters, Burton aimed for a low-budget film of around $18 million, designed in black and white. In this alternative version, Selina would grow up as an ordinary person in a small town.

Waters, on the other hand, envisioned a Batman film with a satirical approach, serving as a metaphorical take on the superhero genre. Waters expressed his idea as follows:

'I wanted to make a Batman film where Batman existed as a metaphor. So, I moved him to Los Angeles, governed not by Gotham but by three filthy superheroes. It was The Boys before The Boys. But [Burton] got tired reading my script.'
