The story starts with the Emperor ordering the Harkonnens to withdraw from Arrakis, transferring control of the planet to the Atreides House.
Lady Jessica is a member of the Bene Gesserit, a shadowy organization of women with superpowers aiming to produce the Kwisatz Haderach, a male superbeing capable of governing humanity through calculated eugenic crossbreeding.
Paul is trained on the Atreides' main planet, Caladan, in a speech pattern that includes "Voice," a Bene Gesserit technique forcing obedience in others, including supernatural abilities.
After the Atreides take control of Arrakis, Duncan is sent to ease tensions with the Fremen in hopes of forming an alliance.
