The Key Events of "Dune: Desert Planet" – A Recap Before Diving Into The Sequel
The much-anticipated sequel to the first Dune movie has hit the screens, captivating audiences once again. Before delving into the second installment, let's take a moment to revisit the crucial events that unfolded in the first film. Dune begins in a distant future where the universe is divided among competing noble houses under the rule of the Emperor.
In this world, the most valuable resource is the spice melange, a hallucinogenic substance essential for interstellar travel. This spice can only be found on the desert planet Arrakis, which is under the control of the Harkonnen House. As events unfold, Arrakis undergoes a power shift as the Atreides House takes control, leading to fierce resistance from the native Fremen population.
The story starts with the Emperor ordering the Harkonnens to withdraw from Arrakis, transferring control of the planet to the Atreides House.
Led by Duke Leto Atreides (Oscar Isaac), the Atreides House becomes the ruthless rival of the Harkonnens. The main character, Paul Atreides (Timothee Chalamet), is Leto's son and heir. Lady Jessica (Rebecca Ferguson) is Leto's concubine with secretive influence over the universe's politics and is a member of the Bene Gesserit, an organization with superhuman abilities.
Lady Jessica is a member of the Bene Gesserit, a shadowy organization of women with superpowers aiming to produce the Kwisatz Haderach, a male superbeing capable of governing humanity through calculated eugenic crossbreeding.
Jessica, instructed to bear a daughter, chooses to give birth to Paul, believing him to be the future Kwisatz Haderach. Bene Gesserit has also developed a religion around a messianic figure, known as Lisan al Gaib or Mahdi, centered on Arrakis over centuries.
Paul is trained on the Atreides' main planet, Caladan, in a speech pattern that includes "Voice," a Bene Gesserit technique forcing obedience in others, including supernatural abilities.
He receives physical combat training from weapons master Gurney Halleck (Josh Brolin) and swordmaster Duncan Idaho (Jason Momoa). Meanwhile, on Arrakis, Paul grapples with problematic, premonitory dreams and visions, including encounters with a Fremen girl later revealed as Chani (Zendaya).
After the Atreides take control of Arrakis, Duncan is sent to ease tensions with the Fremen in hopes of forming an alliance.
As the Atreides prepare to move to Arrakis, the Harkonnen leader, Baron (Stellan Skarsgård), arranges for some of the Empire's most skilled soldiers, the Sardukar, to assist in a coup. Paul undergoes a test by Bene Gesserit leader Reverend Mother Mohiam (Charlotte Rampling) and passes the Gom Jabbar trial, enduring extreme pain.
The Atreides arrive at Arrakeen, the government center of Arrakis, witnessing a spice harvester being swallowed by the giant sandworm Shai-Hulud, which is attracted by rhythmic sounds.
Paul inhales spice, intensifying his visions of the future.
The Atreides face destruction due to betrayal: Dr. Wellington Yueh, the family's doctor, is coerced by the Harkonnens to aid them.
He disables the base's defense shields and immobilizes Duke Leto, giving him a fake tooth filled with poison to kill Baron. The Harkonnens, led by Baron's nephew Glossu Rabban (Dave Bautista), launch an attack on the heavily fortified Atreides stronghold.
Caught off guard and with shields down, the Atreides suffer heavy losses.
Baron kills Dr. Yueh, and as Leto prepares to be killed by the Baron, he bites the poisoned tooth, fatally poisoning himself but only injuring Baron. Paul and Jessica are left to die in the desert but use the 'Voice' to subdue their captors.
When control of Arrakis returns to the Harkonnens, Paul and Jessica become fugitives.
They reunite with Duncan Idaho, who survived the massacre, and seek refuge in a Fremen settlement called Sietch. Along the way, they are attacked by more Sardukar, with Duncan sacrificing himself to buy time for the others to escape.
Paul and Jessica eventually encounter a small group of Fremen, including Stilgar, Chani, and Jamis (Babs Olusanmokun), whom Paul had foreseen in his visions.
Jamis, initially a friendly teacher figure, becomes distrustful and challenges Paul and Jessica to a ritual duel. Paul wins, reluctantly killing his skilled opponent.
The film concludes with Paul seemingly embracing the path of Lisan al Gaib as he is accepted by the Fremen group.
