Sleeping Close to a Bright Source of Light Could Raise the Risk of Heart Attacks

Researchers have reported that exposure to light during sleep could pose a risk to our health. In an extensive study tracking approximately 90,000 adults over a period of more than nine years, it was determined that those who slept in the brightest bedrooms had a 42% higher risk of suffering a heart attack compared to those who slept in the dark.

The findings suggest that not only is there an increased risk of heart attack for those exposed to brighter light throughout the night, but also an elevated risk of heart failure, arrhythmia, and stroke. As the amount of light intensifies, the risk escalates correspondingly.

While one would typically expect blood pressure to drop during sleep, light can disrupt this balance. Moreover, it can alter the release timing of stress hormones such as cortisol, leading to an increase in heart rate and inflammation. In the long run, it's suggested that these conditions may trigger the development of arteriosclerosis, thereby elevating the risk of heart attack. Interestingly, these adverse effects, long known in shift workers, are now encompassing the general population as well. According to the research, women and young adults appear to be more susceptible to the negative impacts of nighttime light.

Given the global rise in heart attacks, experts strongly recommend keeping the sleeping environment as dark as possible to preserve heart health.

Experts suggest the following to maintain your health while sleeping:

Make use of blackout curtains.

Turn off all electronic devices in the bedroom.

If light is absolutely necessary, opt for low-intensity, red-toned lights.

It's important to remember that the darkness of the night is not just crucial for a good night's sleep, but it could also be of critical importance for heart health.
