Scientists Warn Long-Distance Runners!

You might assume that long-distance runners possess a robust health. However, science suggests otherwise. According to Independent, scientists report that the red blood cells of ultra-marathon athletes lose their flexibility following a lengthy race.

This situation, in turn, impedes the efficient transportation of oxygen by the red blood cells.

Engaging in long-distance running at an intense level could potentially accelerate the aging process.

Walking and running, particularly, have proven benefits on the heart and circulatory system. They are often chosen due to their relative ease of practice compared to other sports. Previous research had demonstrated that running at a moderate intensity for 150 minutes per week could improve health.

However, a new study reported by The Independent has turned our previous knowledge upside down. It was suggested that intense long-distance running could lead to the degradation of red blood cells and potentially cause anemia. It was pointed out that scientists have proven that the red blood cells of ultra-marathon athletes lose their flexibility after a long race, which could decrease their ability to transport oxygen efficiently.

In the aftermath of intense long-distance running, signs of inflammation throughout the body and a decrease in molecules that prevent DNA damage were also observed. Travis Nemkov, the lead author of the study published in the peer-reviewed journal Blood Red Cells & Iron, stated, 'Participating in such activities can lead to general inflammation in the body and damage to red blood cells.'

In the study, the health of athletes' red blood cells was examined before and after participating in the 40-kilometer MartignyCombes à Chamonix race and the 171-kilometer Ultra Trail de Mont Blanc race, both held worldwide. The research concluded that signs of damage were consistently observed in the runners' red blood cells. It was also noted that as the running distance increased, the athlete would lose more blood cells and more damage would occur.
