Social Media Campaign Proposes İlber Ortaylı for the Back of 500 Lira Banknotes
The passing of historian and author Ilber Ortaylı has plunged citizens of all colors and thoughts into sorrow. This grief was evidenced by the crowd at the funeral ceremony and the condolences shared on social media. Meanwhile, on social media, a campaign has been launched to place Ortaylı's photo on the back of the new 500-lira banknote that citizens are demanding, even though the Central Bank has denied that there is any such initiative underway.
Inspired by the scientists featured on other banknotes, a social media user initiated such a campaign.
As you may be aware, the reverse side of the 5 Turkish Lira banknote features Aydin Sayili, the first professor of science history in Turkey, while the 10 Turkish Lira note pays tribute to Cahit Arf, a globally recognized scientist and mathematician.
Other users also suggested the Nobel laureate Aziz Sancar.
Many people also suggested Halil İnalcık, a cornerstone of Turkish history, who is also known as the "Mentor of Mentors".
