A new study reveals that nightmares might indicate certain autoimmune diseases. Recurring nightmares, especially those involving being attacked, could point to physical illnesses.

In a study conducted at Cambridge University, a total of 676 lupus patients, 400 clinicians, and 69 autoimmune patients were interviewed.

Lupus, which currently has no definitive cure, is an autoimmune disease causing joint pain, rashes, and fatigue. Autoimmune diseases occur due to hypersensitivity in the individual's immune system.

The study found that a quarter of lupus patients reported experiencing hallucinations and nightmares.

Three out of five lupus patients said they frequently experienced recurring nightmares. One patient described their nightmares as not just 'terrifying' images but also confusing ones.

“It's like I'm coming out of a dream and don’t remember the dream when I wake up. I’m there, but not really...”

This research, the first to suggest that nightmares could be a sign of autoimmune diseases, might make disease tracking easier.

Researchers participating in the study agree that nightmares and hallucinations could serve as a useful “early warning system” for an impending flare-up of an autoimmune disease. Informing patients about what these symptoms might indicate can help manage flare-ups before they become severe.
