‘Mortal Kombat’ Sequel Gets Some Important New Developments

Though Mortal Kombat’s 2021 adaptation was panned by critics, fans of the video games took to the web to say that the film had the appropriate vision to win them over. Regardless of its reviews, the reception for Mortal Kombat was enough to generate interest in a sequel, and we are now getting a handful of updates. Here’s the little information there is to know.

Progress of ‘Mortal Kombat’ Sequel

According to the writer Jeremy Slater, who was not involved with the first film but famously developed and wrote for the recent Moon Knight series, the sequel is about halfway through the writing process. This means the film is still a long way out from even filming, but progress is being made.

Possible Story Directions

A lot has been discussed, both by fans and filmmakers, but there are a couple of major threads that could be explored. Greg Russo, co-writer of Mortal Kombat, envisioned everything as a trilogy of films, with the second featuring a tournament akin to classic modes of the Mortal Kombat games. The director Simon McQuoid has expressed interest to develop Sonya Blade and other female characters more, mentioning the possibility of adding Kitana as well to the fold.

A New Character Emerges!

Slater recently confirmed something that fans have hoped for since the ending of the first film: fan-favorite character Johnny Cage will likely appear in this Mortal Kombat sequel. Other than this, little concrete evidence has been introduced for this upcoming film.
