Microsoft Reports Global Software Issue Affecting 8.5 Million Devices
Microsoft has revealed that a global software issue, originating from cybersecurity service provider CrowdStrike, is estimated to have impacted 8.5 million Windows devices.
In a statement, it was recalled that CrowdStrike, an independent cybersecurity company, released a software update on July 18 that began affecting global information technology systems.
Although this was not a Microsoft incident, it was noted that it impacted its ecosystem. Since the beginning of the incident, the company has maintained constant communication with its customers, CrowdStrike, and external developers to gather information and accelerate solutions.
The statement highlighted that while software updates occasionally cause issues, significant incidents like the one with CrowdStrike are rare, stating,
'We currently estimate that the CrowdStrike update has affected 8.5 million Windows devices, which is less than one percent of all Windows machines.'
Despite the small percentage, it was noted that the widespread economic and social impacts reflect that CrowdStrike is used by organizations running many critical services.
This incident has revealed the interconnected nature of the broad ecosystem consisting of global cloud providers, software platforms, security and other software providers, and customers. Due to the disconnect between CrowdStrike's update and the Microsoft operating system, the global software issue that has affected many sectors negatively impacted life in many parts of the world yesterday.
