Lost Ark Criticized for Class Gender Limitations
The famous South Korean MMORPG has crash-landed in the Western hemisphere. But this doesn’t mean that it had a successful landing. Since its release, the game has received numerous criticisms for having some classes that are gender-locked, which means that some of the classes do not have both male and female options. Because of this issue, players have complained that the game is 'old-fashioned.'
Developer and publisher Smilegate is striving to address the issue with the implementation of “advanced classes”, that are multi-gendered in different classes. They are somewhat balanced, with advanced gunner classes consisting of three males and one female and the martial arts classes vice versa. Though this is still a far cry from a permanent solution, Smilegate has recently announced that the advanced classes will provide a better gender balance in “due time”.
Meanwhile, Amazon Games franchise leader Soomin Park, has stated the changes that will address the issue at hand.
'Classes are tied pretty closely to their character models in terms of function and animation, so bringing opposite gender characters to a class takes more work than just making a differently gendered model available.”
“However, Smilegate RPG is actively working on this; the female Berserker is the next class coming to Korea. While not every class in the game currently has a male and female counterpart available, we made an effort to include those that do in our launch class lineup.”
There is no set date for when these changes will be implemented. As of now, players and fans can expect an update that’s coming this March.
