Let’s get straight to the point: Hair typically grows about half a centimeter per month, which means around six centimeters a year. Each strand of hair emerges from an individual follicle. At the base of the follicle is the hair root, where new hair grows.

Close to the skin, the follicle has sebaceous glands that secrete sebum, which keeps the hair moisturized and healthy.

The hair growth cycle consists of three phases. The first phase is the anagen phase, where new hair is actively growing in the hair follicle. This is followed by the catagen phase, where hair growth stops and the regression period begins. Finally, the telogen phase occurs, also known as the resting period. On the scalp, this final phase can last up to a year.

While the hair is alive within the follicle, it becomes dead once it exits the skin.

Most of your hair is made up of dead keratin cells; however, the hair shaft also contains other components like water and lipids, which play an important role in the health and appearance of the hair.
