Here Are Some Interesting Notes On This Year's Best Picture Moonlight!


With Trump's presidency and his controversial immigration policies, being a minority in USA has reached to an another reality. 

Moonlight successfully reflects the reality of Afro-American people in their community by showing the relationships and identity issues. Moonlight has won the award for Best Picture by literally eliminating La La Land on the stage. Moonlight has also won the awards for Best Supporting Actor and Best Adapted Screenplay.

1. Moonlight is directed by Barry Jenkins. The screenplay of the movie is based on Tarell Alvin McCraney's novel "In Moonlight Black Boys Look Blue" and it is also written by Jenkins.

Moonlight takes about 111 minutes and its estimated budget is around 5 Million Dollars.

2. The cast of Moonlight includes Mahershala Ali, Shariff Earp, Duan Sanderson, Janelle Monáe and Naomie Harris.

3. Moonlight tells the story of "Little" Chiron, who grows up in a ghetto neighborhood of Miami. Chiron's journey from childhood to adulthood is told over the movie.

4. The movie is divided into three parts: First part tells the childhood, second part showcases the puberty and the third part shows Chiron as a young adult.

Moonlight follows the chronological timeframe. For this reason, we are not witnessing any surprises time-wise.

5. The most important features of the movie can be counted as Chiron's relationship with his mother, the moment Chiron met with drug dealer Juan and Teresa, the problems he went through in high-school and the results of all these different situations over his adulthood.

6. The focus point of the movie is the moment where Chiron discovers his own sexual identity.

In this scene, the movie puts a finger upon Afro-American culture's peer pressure. It is a good example of how Afro-American males recreate patriarchy and the perception of being a man in the society.

7. Being born to a neighborhood, in which Chiron was born, refers to being trapped in sociological and economic conditions.

For this reason, it is comparatively difficult to overcome these conditions and peer pressure.

8. Moonlight is apart from the most Hollywood cliches. Probably, the most conformist character of the movie is the drug addict mother.

Overall, it is easy to observe this character's inner conflicts and this saves the movie from falling into the path of common cliches.

It should be noted that the movie has autobiographical features. Both Jenkins and McCraney grow up at the same place, Liberty City, Miami. Both of their parents battled with addiction to drugs and HIV positive. While Jenkins' sexual orientation is heterosexual, McCraney is a homosexual individual.

9. Although his performance is short in duration, Mahershala Ali performs a memorable role in the movie.

Mahershala Ali is awarded with Best Supporting Actor for his role in the movie. Moreover, Ali become the first Muslim person to win an Oscar.

10. Moonlight was nominated for 8 different categories in this year's Oscars including Best Picture, Best Supporting Actor and Best Adapted Screenplay.

Certainly, the success is Moonlight is beyond Academy Awards. The movie has been nominated 243 times and has won 178 of these nominations.

11. Moonlight explores the boundaries of the personal identity and how we change over the situations we've been through.
