9 Games that are Similar to Wordle
Who doesn’t love Wordle? By now, even the most casual internet user has heard about, if not actually played, the addictive game at least once.
Wordle was like manna from heaven when it came out in October 2021, almost one year after the Covid 19 pandemic. Suddenly, people found themselves isolated as fear of the virus prevented people from venturing outdoors.
Enter Wordle, which enables people to feel connected again, thanks to its stylized grid that you can share on social media to indicate your progress (a feature that its creator added after seeing players sharing their results on Instagram).
The success of Wordle opened the floodgates for other online puzzle and word games. Developers began jumping on the bandwagon en masse and started releasing games one after the other. With hundreds of new puzzle games coming out, it’s hard to keep up.
Since Wordle can only be played once a day, we compiled a list of 9 other similar online games for both puzzle and word game junkies alike.
1. Crosswordle
This is Wordle in reverse
Play Frequency: Daily/unlimited
Crosswordle is very much like Wordle, only the game is played in reverse. The answer can already be found on your screen. What you will be doing is work backward to figure out the words you could’ve used to solve the puzzle. Fill in the puzzle starting from the top to bottom.
As always, the color of the tiles will help monitor your progress. Green means it needs a letter in the correct place, yellow a letter in the wrong one, and gray means the letter is not in the final puzzle.
The trickiest among all of the games on this list, you just need to just dive right in and you’ll be hooked in no time.
2. Dungleon
Dungleon
It’s like Wordle but with a ‘dungeon crawler’ twist
Play Frequency: Daily
Here’s something for those who simply prefer picture puzzles, or maybe even the phonetically challenged. Just like Wordle, players pick characters on a keyboard and a tile will change its color to show your progress. A few extra rules and features have been added to keep things interesting, like certain figures may appear more often in combination than others, or the unlocking of “magic spells” to help you figure out the remaining pieces.
3. Framed
It's the movie version of Wordle
Play Frequency: Daily
Okay, cinephiles! Time to check the depth of your knowledge of the flickering image!
Framed is a daily movie guessing game that gives you six tries to name the movie for the day. And like its namesake, you have a total of six frames (film stills) to get it right. Admittedly, the first few stills can be quite generic and difficult to place, but therein lies the beauty of this game. The main protagonists of the movie don’t show up at all, or maybe until the fifth or sixth frame if you’re lucky. Name the movie on the first still and get to have bragging rights amongst your other nerdy friends on social media. Super fun!
4. Heardle
It’s like Wordle but you guess music
Play Frequency: Daily
If by now you’re wishing that the least these game developers can do is to not name their games too close to Wordle, you are not alone. Here’s another browser-based quiz to test your mettle, this time in music. Players are tasked to name a song based on the intro. Each hint reveals more of the intro and you are allowed six guesses to identify the song. They range from rock to pop and could be well-known classics or even obscure one-hit wonders. It’s like Name That Tune for the 21st century. We have to admit, we really like this one!
5. Squabble
It’s like Wordle but played competitively with other players
Frequency: Unlimited
Now here’s a word game with a pulse! Squabble is a multiplayer word game that enables you to join a game with other random players (or friends by using a code), where each wrong guess lowers your health and correct ones helps you heal. You can monitor your competition’s progress as you race to solve the puzzle as quickly as possible. Players who run out of health are eliminated and the game can support as many as 99 players for a Battle Royale style free for all. The last player standing wins.
6. Squareword
7. Quordle
It’s like Wordle but you only guess four words at a time.
Play frequency: Daily
You are allowed nine attempts to guess four words. Each guess appears in all four puzzles, which means focusing on one word translates to using up your guesses in the rest. It can get quite tricky and it might take a while before you get used to the task. This game is perfect for those who find Wordle a little too easy. Challenging enough?
8. Waffle
A six word-Wordle with drag-and-drop action
Play Frequency: Daily
Waffle is a crossword puzzle for the drag and drop generation. You must solve the crossword in 15 moves or less by rearranging (drag and dropping) the given letters. Like Wordle, the color of the tiles change to indicate your progress and both horizontal and vertical tiles share common letters. The difference between Waffle and the crosswords of old is that it is less challenging, as all the letters needed to solve the puzzle are already given. It’s a great way to start your day and a fun learning tool for kids as well.
9. Worldle
It’s like Wordle but you guess country names
Play Frequency: Once a day
How about a geography guessing game? They say that imitation is the highest form of flattery and It seems that there is no end to Wordle spinoffs in the foreseeable future. Like Wordle, Worldle is played once a day, and the results can be shared on social media as well. The look, the rules, and even the name are almost exactly the same.
