RJ Graham and his colleagues from the University of Chicago conducted a new study on how Earth’s end may unfold.
The Sun is said to be currently in the middle of its fusion lifespan. At about 5 billion years old, the Sun, like us, is growing and aging. As it ages, certain characteristics begin to change.
These changes in the Sun will also alter some balances on Earth.
The Sun will continue its process of turning hydrogen into helium, and the proportions in its core will gradually change. Over time, the Sun will become more efficient at fusing hydrogen. Its brightness will increase, and this increase will have noticeable effects on Earth. The carbon, nitrogen, and phosphorus cycles will be disrupted, and the amount of carbon dioxide will decrease.
A decrease in carbon dioxide levels will prevent plants from photosynthesizing.
The disruption of plant life cycles will reduce the amount of oxygen needed by animals and humans. The number of animals that rely on plants as a source of life will decrease. Even if humanity finds a way to grow plants, the amount of oxygen produced by plants will still decrease. Eventually, only microbes will survive on Earth!
Fortunately, it is estimated that this disaster is still about 1.6 billion years away.
By then, unless humanity brings about the end of Earth itself, the Sun, which provides warmth to the planet, will ultimately bring about its end.
