The movie turns the haunted house theme on its head by telling the entire story from the perspective of a ghost. However, this unique narrative approach isn’t the only thing that stands out; the director’s inspiration is also quite interesting: one of the popular ghost-hunting reality shows from the 2000s.
In an interview with SFX magazine, the American director explained his fascination with ghost stories.
'One of my favorite shows is Celebrity Ghost Stories. I highly recommend it. You can see that people are traumatized by these experiences. They’re not joking. What makes most of these stories different is how real they feel.'
This led him to the idea of telling a story from a ghost’s perspective.
In the film, the camera directly represents the ghost’s point of view.
The film stars Lucy Liu, known for the Charlie's Angels series, as Rebekah, a troubled mother.
Rebekah moves into a 100-year-old house against the wishes of her family. The cast also includes Chris Sullivan, Callina Liang, Eddy Maday, West Mulholland, and Julia Fox.
Strange events soon begin to occur in the house.
While Rebekah disregards her husband’s warnings and focuses all her attention on her competitive son, Tyler, she ignores the fears felt by her daughter, Chloe.
It doesn’t take long before we realize that there’s a presence in the house that no one else seems to notice: a ghost.
