According to security camera footage, a 45-year-old man waiting on the platform was suddenly pushed onto the tracks by an individual approaching from behind. A disaster was narrowly avoided when a train approaching the station was able to stop in time.
The victim was pulled from between the subway cars and taken to Bellevue Hospital.
Doctors stated that the man, who had rib fractures and a skull fracture, was in stable condition.
Police apprehended 23-year-old Kamel Hawkins about an hour after the incident at the 59th Street Station.
It was revealed that Hawkins, who lives in Brooklyn, had a criminal record for various offenses. He was arrested and charged with attempted murder and aggravated assault. A witness at the station, who was present during the incident, described the experience: 'He pushed the man onto the tracks suddenly. It was very frightening. I immediately called 911. I’m still in shock.'
Mayor Eric Adams pointed out that efforts to increase subway security were ongoing, acknowledging that while crime rates have dropped, the public remains concerned about such incidents.
