Game of Thrones, one of the most phenomenal and famous shows ever, now has its own franchise. Its prequel, The House of the Dragon, has only seven episodes, but it has already made history as a hit on HBO's streaming service, HBO Max. George R. Martin wrote and produced The House of The Dragon, which focuses on Taryagen's family history and transports viewers to a 200-year timeline before the events of Game of Thrones.

The premiere of the first episode of House of the Dragon went through the roof when it was seen by almost 10 million people. Within the first week, it was seen by 20 million people, making it the highest-grossing HBO show ever.

With the accomplishments of the show and the hype that it brought to the viewers, the HBO company decided that the fans deserve more of it.

Renewal Status

The premiere of House Of The Dragon took place on HBO on August 21, 2022. It was made available for streaming in 4K quality, in both HBO Max and Dolby. After dethroning Stranger Things Season 4, the show dominated the streaming platform.

According to the statement of Francesca Orsi (the EVP of HBO company), their company team is beyond proud of what the House Of The Dragon team achieved in Season 1. She also added that the crew did an outstanding job that exceeded everyone's expectations for the show. She also said that they could not be happier to continue the epic storyline of House Targaryen in Season 2.

House of The Dragon Season 2 Release Date

Just like Game of Thrones, The House of the Dragon also depends heavily on VFX special effects and the editing process. Even if we are not certain when the season will end, we can expect that the iconic dragons of the original series will be present in the incoming new season.

Hence, with the great value of the show, it will surely take much time and effort from the production team for the episodes to be made, and it is expected that Season 2 is still a long way out from its release. The first season took 10 months to film, but that doesn't include the time it took to add special effects and edit the footage.

The previous data shows that the filming of Season 2 will also take a year, while the VFX process' duration would be likely on par with the filming. It simply means that Season 2 of The House of the Dragon might take a couple of years to be released, and the year 2024 is not a bad estimation.

House of The Dragon Season 2 Cast

The writer of Game of Thrones and The House of the Dragon is known for killing the characters for the sake of a thrill. Thus, it is quite hard to tell who among the characters will make it out alive after the 10 episodes. If the main characters were to make it alive, it is expected to see Princess Rhaenyra Targaryen (Emma D'Arcy), Alicent Hightower(Olivia Cooke), Prince Daemon Targaryen (Matt Smith), Ser Criston Cole(Fabien Frankel), and Rhaenys Targaryen (Eve Best) in the next season. However, the survival and presence of King Viserys Targaryen in Season 2 is not certain, considering that he had fatal wounds that he got from the Iron Throne.

Overall, the presence of the characters in the next season depends on their fate at the end of Season 1.

House of The Dragon Season 2 Plot

As we saw in Season 1, the events primarily focus on Targaryen's civil war, also known as the Dance of the Dragons, a bloody battle for everyone who desired power on the throne. The flow of the story took a long path, from Rhaenyra acquiring the heir, and the fast forward into teaming up with other cast members.

According to co-creators Ryan Condal and George R. R. Martin's statements when they announced the series' renewal, the full dance may not take place until Season 2. Coldan also stated that they are already working with the iconic dragon that will appear in Season 2. The budget for Season 2 was already set, and it's likely that it will exceed the fans' expectations once again.

How many Seasons Will The House of The Dragon Have?

Many speculate that The House Of The Dragon would be like The Game Of Thrones in a way that the seasons exceed what is written in the book. However, Ryan Condel and Miguel Sapochnik informed the fans in their interview that they had already thought of a plan on how to end the series. So far, they have plotted that the series would like to only have a range of two to three seasons.

Aside from that, they also hinted that the spinoff would start another Targaryen Dynasty quest that would bring the story back to the ruins of Valyria and the conquest of King Aegon I.
