The film, based on William Shakespeare’s classic play of the same name, stars Denzel Washington as the Scottish nobleman Macbeth and Frances McDormand as Lady Macbeth.The play centers on a power-hungry husband and wife duo who let ambition corrupt them, causing their downfall. The story is one of Shakespeare’s best-known, so it would do well to brush up on the Sparknotes version before you watch (although we wouldn’t blame you for just diving right in).In addition to Washington and McDormand, the film also stars Antony Sher as Banquo and Justin Kirk as Donalbain. It was also co-directed by Ethan Coen—who is responsible for films such as Fargo and No Country For Old Men—and received universal acclaim from critics when it was released in 2000.
