On January 10, 1992, the cargo ship named Ever Laurel, en route from Hong Kong to Tacoma in the United States, was caught in a severe storm in the North Pacific. Among the 12 shipping containers toppled by the waves, one contained 28,800 solid and waterproof plastic toys intended for children to play with in the bath. This convoy of yellow ducks, blue turtles, red beavers, and green frogs was scattered into the waters when the container burst in the middle of the ocean.

What began as a seemingly ordinary cargo accident transformed into one of the longest and most unusual environmental studies in history, thanks to the intervention of ocean scientists.

Ebbesmeyer began tracking the toys by collecting reports from coastal communities.

The toy convoy, dubbed 'Friendly Floatees', quickly dispersed and began to map out the ocean currents:

Some of the toys were caught in massive circular currents, washing up on the shores of Hawaii, Japan, and North America.

A group of toys that crossed the Bering Strait got trapped in Arctic sea ice. After years of being carried along by the ice, they were eventually set free by melting ice and reached the North Atlantic.

The toys, having covered an estimated distance of about 27,000 kilometers, continued to wash up on shores across a vast geography, from the eastern coasts of the U.S. to the shores of Europe.

This spillage, which occurred purely by accident, provided scientists with a colossal amount of data that would have cost billions of dollars to collect using traditional methods.

The journey of the toys proved that ocean currents are not independent; instead, they form a massive network that connects all the seas of the planet. Many of the ocean prediction simulations and computer models used today were developed thanks to the paths these ducks followed.

On the other hand, this incident also highlighted the persistence of marine pollution. The fact that plastic, which floats undecomposed in the oceans for decades, can pollute even pristine beaches thousands of kilometers away when dumped into the sea, became a global public concern.

This unplanned adventure, lasting over 30 years, brought the hidden highways beneath the waves to light, and is recorded as one of the most interesting case studies in the history of science.
