In Japan, which boasts one of the world's most powerful passports, the rules operate differently for the country's top figure.
According to a special decree issued by the Japanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs, it is deemed 'inappropriate' to issue passports for the 126th Emperor Naruhito and his wife, Empress Masako, who are considered symbols of the state.
This privilege is only valid for the current Emperor and Empress. Other members of the dynasty and heir princes are obliged to carry diplomatic passports for their visits abroad.
In the UK, passports are issued directly in the name of the monarch and on behalf of their office.
Due to this legal justification, there is no necessity for King Charles III to carry a passport in his own name. This rule, which was also applicable to the late Queen Elizabeth II, continues with King Charles who ascended to the throne.
All other members of the royal family (including Queen Camilla and Prince William) are obliged to use passports when traveling. On the other hand, King Charles III's privilege is not limited to passports; he is also exempted from the obligation of carrying a driver's license when driving in England or abroad.
