Netflix has a New True-Crime Series Cooking: ‘Murdaugh Murders: A Southern Scandal’: What is it About?

If you’re a fan of true-crime projects, Netflix got your needs for 2023 sorted with its new releases from the genre. The streaming platform recently shared the official trailer for a forthcoming true-crime show, Murdaugh Murders: A Southern Scandal, ahead of its major release. 

Murdaugh Murders: A Southern Scandal joins other actual crime films and series on Netflix, such as Worst Roommate Ever, Unsolved Mysteries, Night Stalker: The Hunt For a Serial Killer, Most Hated Man on the Internet, and I Just Killed My Dad. 

The Murdaugh family was an influential American family based in South Carolina. From approximately 1920, some family members worked in the county district as solicitors until 2014, when Richard Murdaugh was called for questioning regarding various cases such as multiple murders, association in drug businesses, corruption, insurance fraud, and more. 

In June 2021, Richard’s wife and son were killed, implicating him as the main suspect. Richard resigned from the family law firm in September 2021, from when he was confined with pending trials until January 2023, when his murder trial started. 

In association with Jenner Furst, Julia W. Nason, and other professionals, Netflix will bring to light the story of the Murdaughs through a three-episode documentary series. 

The show highlights the Murdaughs’ century-long history and service in the legal sector, investigating the mysterious murders of Richard’s wife, Maggie, and son, Paul, and those of their house manager and Steven Smith.

In 2 minutes and 23 seconds, the official trailer for Murdaugh Murders: A Southern Scandal begins with narrations from some members closely connected to the Murdaugh family and the beach accident that killed Mallory Beach. 

The trailer continues to glimpse at other significant murders tied to the Murdaughs, including that of Maggie (wife), Paul (son), Stephen Smith (a student), Gloria Satterfield (housekeeper), and more.

Besides serving as directors, Furst and Nason also chiefly produce the series alongside Michael Gasparro. 

Some of the faces that will testify and narrate their ordeals with the Murdaughs include Anthony Cook (Mallory’s boyfriend), Morgan Doughty (Paul’s girlfriend), Connor Cook and Miley Altman (Mallory’s childhood friends), and Michael De Witt (journalist).

Season one of Murdaugh Murders: A Southern Scandal will debut on Wednesday, February 22, 2023, exclusively on Netflix.
