Death is Our Dinner Companion In 'American Horror Story: NYC'
Warning: This article contains spoilers for the first two episodes of 'American Horror Story: NYC', which aired October 19, 2022. Stella came into the community center every day wearing giant church hats and silky sundresses, smelling of Swisher Sweets. She had the face of Archie Bunker, but she moved with the grace of a true lady. She'd sit in the computer room, making use of the free internet while a never-ending round of young men and women came bustling in and out causing drama. We'd often trade looks and roll our eyes as they raided the condom bowl at the front desks and snuck tricks into the bathroom. Their haggard look, track marks, and pockmarked faces spoke volumes. I saw them as black holes, devouring everything they could--sex, meth, heroin, crack; they lived to fill themselves up.  I was a young high school student trying to do my homework, and the community center had the closest computer lab. They also had a giant library filled with radical gay literature and more than a few books on Stonewall, a personal obsession of mine. One day, I was sitting in the back, ignoring everything around me when I heard a deep voice with a thick New York accent. 'Well aren't you just the fruitiest thing that ever existed?' I looked up to see Stella giving me a vulgar smile. 'You know I was there,' she said, pointing at my book. The conversation that ensued stuck with me for years to come. Not one word of it could be verified, but if she was lying she definitely knew her stuff. She named restaurants and bars, and events that occurred during the riots--stuff I could verify in books and internet searches. She even had detailed stories about the locals in Greenwich Village. She said the historical figures in those books were just like the kids at the community center: blackholes. It's understandable. When the world hates you, and they won't house you or employ you, then you're going to hustle and do drugs. These weren't just lost. They were abandoned, so they feasted on everything they could, and then their world crumbled. Everyone she knew was dead. Death became their dinner companion.

The Handmaid's Tale: Serena Joy Doesn't Deserve Our Sympathy
Warning: This post contains spoilers for season 5 episode 7 'No Man's Land,' which aired October 19, 2022. Blessed be the fruit loops!'The Handmaid's Tale' has a way of catching the audience off guard. My first shocker moment was a few months before the show was released when I was refreshing my browser every few minutes for updates. I was certain that they would screw it up somehow, remove the theocratic elements or underfund it. There are certain subjects that Hollywood avoids, and Margaret Atwood's novel contained all of them. When I saw the picture of Yvonne Strahovski, I was furious. The Serena that I loved was played by the legendary Faye Dunaway in the 1990 film, and Strahovski was nothing like her. I wanted twisted TBN, snake-eyes, and 3-foot-high curls--someone intimidating and absurd. Instead, they gave us a stock photo model with whitened teeth. She belonged in a Gap window display, not a theocratic dictatorship. I took to social media to air my grievances. I thought the rest of the fanbase would agree with me. But they saw something I didn't. Serena was a political pundit who helped win the hearts and minds of the nation. She was supposed to subtle and deceptive. People would look at her and think she was some gluten-free college graduate that studied Buddhism and took yoga classes--not a vicious wife with a beating cane and a handmaid confined to her room. It made sense.

'Dune: The Sisterhood' Everything We Know So Far
Dune's Bene Gesserit sisterhood is by far one of the most interesting concepts in science fiction. They're a group of so-called witches whose superior mental and physical prowess has allowed them to develop superhuman powers. They control the politics of the known universe with fake religion, sex, and subterfuge. Their secrets are veiled in complex rituals and encoded texts. They employ concubines, detect lies, and they have the ability to control their biology on a molecular level. They were designed to be intriguing, and they deserve our undivided attention. It is criminal how little screentime they've received over the years. Fortunately, HBOMax plans on changing that with a new series 'Dune: The Sisterhood.' Details about the series are starting to come out. They are quite promising, but it's only enough to keep us interested. We'll have to wait to decide whether or not it's worth our time. The studio does have some big shoes to fill. Frank Herbert went above and beyond to create epic, philosophical manuscripts with detailed lore. His work is believable, poetic, and well thought out. It might be difficult to find a team that can match his talent.
