The Kızılırmak Delta Bird Sanctuary : Samsun's Natural Paradise
Nestled just 30 kilometers from the city of Samsun, the Kızılırmak Delta stands as one of Turkey's largest and most magnificent river deltas. This natural wonder is not just a confluence of water and land but a living testament to nature's beauty and diversity. It has rightly been recognized and is on UNESCO’s Tentative List for World Heritage sites.
A Symphony of Ecosystems
The delta is a rich tapestry of ecosystems, from deciduous forests known as 'Galeriç' that get inundated in the spring, to vast stretches of sand dunes that form a barrier between the lakes and the sea. These dunes often tower 7-8 meters high, stretching in bands of 200-300 meters along the coast, with some even reaching a staggering 12 meters.

But perhaps the most striking feature of the Kızılırmak Delta is its vibrant avian life. Serving as Turkey’s very own 'Bird Paradise', the delta offers shelter and breeding grounds for an astonishing variety of birds. Out of the 420 bird species identified in Turkey, an impressive 340 species have been recorded in the delta, with 140 of these using the region as their breeding ground.
A Refuge for Endangered Species
The Kızılırmak Delta is not just about numbers; it's about preservation. 15 out of the 24 globally endangered bird species have been spotted here. Birds like the Greater Sand Plover, Pallas's Gull, Little Gull, and Mediterranean Gull, which had not been sighted elsewhere in the last two decades, have found a safe haven in this delta. Other critically endangered birds such as the Crested Pelican, Little Cormorant, Red-necked Goose, Pin-tailed Sandgrouse, Imperial Eagle, Sea Eagle, Lesser Kestrel, and Bustard, have also graced this region with their presence.
Facilities for the Curious Minds
For those wishing to immerse themselves in the beauty of the Kızılırmak Delta Bird Sanctuary, there are facilities that cater to both casual tourists and dedicated ornithologists. The area boasts a Visitor Center, an Administrative Center, and two Bird Watching Towers. At the Visitor Center, one can find an Image Viewing Center, an Exhibition Hall, and even a shopping section that introduces visitors to local products. Live feeds from cameras placed strategically around the delta are available for viewing, offering a virtual tour of the delta's diverse environments. The Bird Watching Towers, on the other hand, offer enthusiasts an unobstructed view, bringing them closer to the avian wonders of the delta.
