Defne Samyeli Says the Time She Felt Least Beautiful Was During Her Beauty Pageant
For years Defne Samyeli has been talked about for her looks and her fit, polished style. Yet the Turkish presenter and singer, who placed third at Miss Turkey in 1991, says the pageant period felt very different from the inside than it looked from the outside.
Defne Samyeli went from a beauty pageant to a career on screen and on stage.
After finishing third at Miss Turkey in 1991, Defne Samyeli became a familiar face on Turkish television as a presenter and news anchor. Following her acting work she turned to music, and today she also performs on stage.
Now 54, Defne Samyeli regularly draws attention for her style, her commitment to exercise and her social media posts.
She says the pageant was the period when she felt her least beautiful.
Speaking on the programme Katarsis about her pageant days, Defne Samyeli described how having her physical features judged by others affected her. Beauty becoming something to be measured and compared, she said, made her question herself.
“The time in my life when I felt the ugliest was the time I took part in the beauty pageant,” she said.
Defne Samyeli added that after the contest she was pressured to have cosmetic surgery on her nose, but did not change it. Today, she said, she has learned to be kinder to herself, does not believe in the idea of perfection and sees getting older in a positive light.
