What We Need From the Final Season of 'The Handmaid's Tale'
Warning: This article contains spoilers for season 5 of 'The Handmaid's Tale.''The Handmaid's Tale' franchise is not known for its happy endings. Atwood transports us to hell, shows us the true meaning of suffering, and then maybe in a century or so, she'll give us a hint. She's completely unapologetic about it. There were fans that had been waiting more than 20 years to see what happened to June after season one. It was suggested that she might've gotten out, but nobody was sure if she made it across the border. In true Handmaid's Tale fashion, the series made sure that she didn't. Instead, she was herded onto a gallows, muzzled, cuffed, and forced to endure a mock hanging. It was the most powerful, awe-inspiring scene I have ever witnessed, and that was just the second season. They knew they had to deliver, and they did. They're going to do the same with the sixth and final installment. But this time we have some demands. Some characters are sacred and untouchable. Certain conditions must be met. June needs to find peace and safety, and it has to be moving and thought-provoking.

Invoking Shachath: How Death and Rage Can Change the World in 'American Horror Story'
Warning: This article contains spoilers for 'American Horror Story: NYC' episode 8. On March 9, 1969, a homosexual man named Howard Elfland was beaten to death by LAPD. On June 24, 1973, a gay bar in New Orleans, Upstairs Lounge, was burnt down. 32 people were killed in the fire. On November 27, 1978, Harvey Milk, the openly gay city supervisor of San Francisco was assassinated by his political rival, Dan White, at City Hall. Outrage over the incident and White's short sentence--which lasted only 5 years--led to what is now known as the White Night riots. In January of 1979, Tennessee Williams was attacked by 5 teenage boys in Key West, Florida. He barely escaped serious injury. The attack was part of a larger spree of anti-gay violence inspired by a newspaper run by a local Baptist minister. On January 1, 1982, John Hanson and Rick Hunter were beaten by police outside the Y'all Come Back Saloon in Minneapolis. Hospital workers testified that the police referred to them as 'f*ggots' while their wounds were being treated. On October 27, 1992, U.S. Petty Officer Allen Schindler was stomped to death by his shipmate in a public restroom in Japan. He had been making multiple complaints about anti-gay harassment in the service. His name was used to justify the military's 'Don't Ask, Don't Tell' policy. It made it impossible for service members to report harassment, and it allowed the armed services to justify discharging someone for their sexual orientation and gender identity. In 1993, Brandon Teena, a FTM trans man was violated and murdered when his birth sex was revealed to his male friends. The events leading up to his death were chronicled in the film Boys Don't Cry.  On March 9, 1995, Scott Amedure was murdered after an appearance on 'The Jenny Jones' show, where he confessed to having a secret crush on his friend Jonathan Schmitz. Schmitz purchased a shotgun, shot him, then turned himself in to the police. On February 21, 1997, a lesbian nightclub in Atlanta, Otherside Loung, was bombed by a man named Eric Robert Rudolph. Typing Up Loose Ends in Season 5 of 'The Handmaid's Tale'
Warning: This article contains spoilers for the entirety of season 5 of 'The Handmaid's Tale.'Blessed Be the Fruit Loops!Where did the time go? It seemed like only yesterday we were checking Google News every 3 seconds for updates on season 5, and now it's over. It's hard not to feel robbed. Seasons 2 and 3 had 13 episodes. Now we have to be content with 10. With only one season left, we deserve more--more June, more Nick and Rose--a few flashbacks and something to tie the story together. Sure, we have 'The Testaments' spin-off coming, and Aunt Lydia to tuck us in at night, but it won't be the same. June is our gal. We've been living inside her head for 5 years. How do we shake something like that off? Will we be like method actors, struggling to silence the characters we took on, or will we be like addicts, aching for something that's always out of reach? We now have an entire year to struggle through, and there are loose ends that haven't been tied up. Some of what's to come is completely new and unpredictable. We have no idea what will happen in Hawaii, or if June will ever get there. Nick and Janine's fates are completely unknown, and then there's Lydia, a seething cauldron of hatred and bitterness. Where will things go with her? We do have clues. Each character has their intention, and every situation has its limits, especially in Gilead. But much of it is up to the writers. They weave their web in secret, and they know how to throw us off. It will be exciting to see what they come up with--if we don't die from suspense while we're waiting.

By Her Hand: The Good Works of June Osborne in 'The Handmaid's Tale'
How do I love thee? Let me count the ways. -Emily Barret BrowningThere's a certain type of love that thrives in darkness, where we can dream its shape, rather than face its flaws and imperfections. If it were to be illuminated, it would shrivel and die, because it's not about the person we claim to care about. It's about how we want to feel. We become addicted to butterflies in our stomachs, warm smiles, and a gentle touch, so we tell ourselves a story. We don't have to work for this kind of love. We already want it. That's why it's so common in fiction. Writers will build an ideal of a human being, someone orderly and beautiful, feeding us only as many flaws as we can accept. They create a myth because they know that if they dive into the confusing mess of human nature, we'll just roll our eyes and walk away. That's not true love.True love is the warm glow that a mother feels when she holds her newborn, or the passion of two seasoned lovers that can still move to the same rhythm, regardless of what they've been through. It doesn't fade, and it doesn't falter. It thrives in the light because we train ourselves. We work for it. We put in the effort to truly care, no matter what. That is the kind of love that 'The Handmaid's Tale' wants us to feel for June Osborne. They don't concern themselves with visions or dreams. They're concerned with reality.
