One of the greatest dreams of those wishing to adopt a pet is to have a companion at home without dealing with the issue of shedding fur. Particularly those who are allergic to cat fur or extra meticulous about cleanliness, they immediately embark on a quest for a 'non-shedding cat'. The first and most popular breed that they encounter in this search is undoubtedly the Sphynx cats, which stand out with their hairless structures. These noble creatures, which at first glance seem to completely eliminate the hassle of fur cleaning, in fact, leave behind a completely different maintenance routine that very few people are aware of.

A Sphynx owner responded to comments on social media like 'What a nice non-shedding cat, at least you don't have a fur problem' with a video. The post showed the intense brown stains left on blankets, couches, and gray cushions where the hairless cat spent time throughout the day. The moments when the couches were cleaned with professional washing machines and the pitch-black dirt coming out of the vacuumed water was poured into the toilet, left those with little knowledge about Sphynx cats in astonishment.

So, how could a hairless cat possibly make such a mess of the household items?

So, how could a hairless cat possibly make such a mess of the household items?

The reason for this is the unique skin structure of Sphinx cats. Just like regular furry cats, their bodies also produce natural oils throughout the day. However, in the case of furry cats, these oils are absorbed by their fur and cleaned when the cat grooms itself. In contrast, Sphinx cats lack a layer of fur to absorb this oil, resulting in all the produced sebum accumulating directly on their bare skin. If these cats are not bathed weekly with special shampoos or regularly wiped with damp cloths, they start to leave what can be described as 'oil stamps' on every piece of furniture they sit on and every blanket they lie on. Moreover, this secretion turns into stubborn stains that cannot be removed by regular wiping and require professional upholstery cleaning machines to extract once it seeps into fabrics. Therefore, while choosing a non-shedding cat may save you from the hassle of vacuuming, it could place you right in the middle of upholstery cleaning and cat bathing duties. Even though they are undeniably very aesthetic and special breed, before adopting a Sphinx, you should think twice about whether you are prepared to bathe your cat every week instead of simply brushing its fur.
