Shelvey Criticizes His Country, Saying He Doesn’t Want His Children to Grow Up in England

Former Premier League midfielder Jonjo Shelvey has emphasized that his surprise transfer to Emirati football last month was not about money. The 33-year-old player, who has worn the jerseys of clubs such as Liverpool, Newcastle, Rizespor, and Eyüpspor, stated that his move to the third league in the United Arab Emirates was due to both professional and personal reasons.

Speaking to BBC, Shelvey said, 'I've heard some people say 'he went for the money'. But what money? There's no big money in the UAE 2nd League,' he said. 'The average salary for players here is 2,000 pounds a month. Compared to what I've earned throughout my career, this is nothing.'

Shelvey also expressed that he did not want his children to grow up in England.

Shelvey stated, 'To be honest, I no longer want my children to grow up in England. We were fortunate to live in a beautiful part of England, but where I originally come from, where I was born, I believe you can't have 'nice things'.'

Shelvey added, 'I never wear a watch in London anymore. I think even using a phone outside in London is not safe.'

Shelvey's decision to move to Dubai coincided with a recent trend of sports stars and high-income individuals settling in the United Arab Emirates. In the past few months, he has followed in the footsteps of names like Rio Ferdinand, Roger Federer, and Ronnie O’Sullivan, who have started living in the UAE.

According to observers, the tax exemption, high level of security, and year-round sunny weather have made Dubai an attractive hub for both athletes nearing the end of their careers and professionals seeking a safer and more stable life for their families.

Shelvey stated that he was arrested in his home country due to a tweet that was posted by someone.

Shelvey stated, 'I'm not really into politics,' and added:

'I just see some of what's going on. I see people getting arrested over a tweet, flags being taken down, and the rhetoric of 'taking back the country'.'

The English actor said, 'I won't comment on such issues because I don't think I'm knowledgeable enough. If I carry on, I'll get myself into trouble.' Shelvey stated, 'But I just feel this; the United Kingdom isn't what it was 1015 years ago.'
