Over 2,000 Homes Used This Solar System to Get Free Power for 9 Years
In the informal settlement of Enkanini in Stellenbosch, South Africa, over 2,000 shanty homes deprived of the public grid were electrified through an innovative social responsibility project. As part of the initiative led by the social enterprise iShack Project, free solar energy kits were installed in thousands of households between the years 2013 and 2022. This provisional solution served as a lifeline for hundreds of families waiting for official electricity infrastructure.
The systems that were established consist of solar panels with a peak power of 50-75 watts (Wp) mounted on the roofs of houses, batteries that provide storage, and distribution boxes.
Although this capacity might be insufficient for large electric household appliances or stoves, it was adequate to continuously meet basic needs such as lighting, charging mobile phones, and running a television.
The project didn't just distribute equipment, but it placed the local residents right at the heart of the process. Thanks to the trained local representatives, installation, maintenance, troubleshooting, and billing were all carried out by the community itself. This model not only reduced dependency on external sources, but also opened new doors for income and employment within the local community.
Experts and project managers underscore that such off-grid solutions serve as a fantastic bridge to meet urgent needs, but they caution that these cannot replace a full infrastructure.
While solar panels may illuminate homes, they do not solve fundamental public issues in the area such as sewage, road, and construction safety.
Although definitive balances about the course of the project were not announced after the completion of the free period in Enkanini in 2022, this 9-year-long experiment demonstrated to the world how technology, when combined with community participation, can create rapid transformation even in the most challenging living spaces.
