What are the Caves of Heaven and Hell? Natural Formation and Geographical Structure

What are the Caves of Heaven and Hell? Natural Formation and Geographical Structure

Heaven and Hell Caves are actually not caves, but two large natural cavities with a collapsed (obruk) structure. They were formed as a result of thousands of years of karstic erosion and dissolution of limestone layers by underground waters. Since these depressions have cave-like widths and depths in places, they are known as caves among the people.

  • Cennet Çökükük has a length of approximately 250 metres, a width of 110 metres and a depth of 70 metres. To reach the lowest point, a 452-step stone staircase is descended. There is also an ancient church inside.

  • Cehennem Çökükük is 110 metres deep and it is not possible to descend to the bottom due to the steep walls. It can only be watched from its surroundings.

Mythological and Legendary Importance

Mythological and Legendary Importance

The Caves of Heaven and Hell are not only natural formations, but also hold an important place in Ancient Greek mythology. These depressions are considered to be the place where Zeus defeated the monster Typhon and took him captive. According to legend:

Typhon is a terrible monster who waged war against Zeus, the god of gods. Zeus defeated Typhon and imprisoned him in the Abyss. However, when this creature is shaken with anger from time to time, earth tremors (earthquakes) occur.

This legendary narrative increased the mythological importance of the region and attracted the attention of many travellers from antiquity to the present day.

The most remarkable structure that greets you when you descend into the cave of Paradise is a small Byzantine church dating back to the 5th century. Dedicated to St Paulus, this church is located near the mouth of the cave and is thought to have been used by hermit monks during the early Christian period.

There are also ancient stone staircases, natural hollows and stone structures thought to have been used for religious purposes throughout the area. These structures prove that the caves are not only a natural wonder, but also a religious and cultural centre.

Although the caves are open to visitors throughout the year, spring and autumn are the most ideal periods. Hot weather in summer can make climbing up and down the stairs difficult. Since the Cehennem Cave can only be viewed from the top, it is less affected by weather conditions; however, those who want to descend to the Cehennem Cave are advised to come with suitable shoes.
