History of Baris Manco House
This house, which serves as a museum today, was built by Mr. Dawson between 1895 and 1900 by Pape Kalfa. After Dawson's return to his country, the building changed hands many times in the 1930s, and was purchased by John Whittall in 1965 and became known as the “Whittal Mansion”.
Baris Manco bought this mansion from the Whittall family in 1984 and remodelled it. The building bears the traces of 19th-century Victorian architecture. The artist passed away in this house in 1999. As a tribute to Baris Manco's quote, “The last time a person stops being talked about is when they are considered dead.”, his family turned this house into a museum with the cooperation of Kadıköy Municipality and Türk Halk Bankası.

Visitor Comments

'He was one of the rare artists raised in Turkey, cultured and fluent in several foreign languages. The museum is closed on Mondays and has no parking lot, but it is a must-see. I respectfully commemorate this artist who is engraved in our hearts with his song ‘Arkadaşım Eşşek’, which is beloved by our children. Many items and objects related to his life and profession are exhibited. Although I went on a weekday, it was very busy, I couldn't take photos easily. I highly recommend it.'
'We visited the house of Baris Manco, a valuable artist who passed away on January 31, 1999. If you are a bit older like me, this house will take you back in time. His clothes, rings, Beta/VHS tapes of his TV programs... And best of all, antique furniture reflecting the period. As a lover of Istanbul, I recommend this experience to everyone.'
'The precious house where Baris Manco spent his years. Many areas, such as his paintings, liquor collection, awards, guest rooms and his children's rooms are open. Museum ticket prices are quite affordable: 24 TL for students and 39 TL for adults.'
'It was a museum house, as the name suggests. You feel like you are visiting Baris Manco's house. Although I didn't see anything very impressive, it was nice to walk in the footsteps of a great artist I admire. I especially admired the kimonos.'
'The house in Moda where Baris Manco lived when he passed away. It is located in a quiet neighbourhood. Nicely developed as a museum. Entrance fees are reasonable: full 39 TL, student 24 TL. Each floor of the 3-storey house is like a journey through time. I definitely want to visit it again.'
