Winning high-profile awards pretty much non-stop this year, Drive My Car is destined to win at least one of four applicable Academy Awards. Director Ryusuke Hamaguchi, only the third Japanese director ever nominated for Best Picture at the Oscars, has a chance to win after Parasite’s historic success set a precedent for non-English language films in 2020.

With a constant stream of new music every week, the occasional record ranks below the others. Some albums seemed destined to be critical failures (the new Machine Gun Kelly album, for example); however, records from promising artists that take a sharp downturn can be even more disappointing. Here are some of those albums from 2022, not necessarily as bad as Machine Gun Kelly, but disappointing that they somewhat tarnish a promising artist’s reputation.

The R&B singer Summer Walker broke numerous records at the end of 2021 with her sophomore album Still Over It. Not only did it debut at #1 on the Billboard 200, but the album also received the most single-day full-length streams on Apple Music to date. After the release of Still Over It, she had 18 tracks simultaneously on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. While the album is a good collection of songs, this record is also much more significant. Still Over It represents Walker’s journey through the two years leading up to the album’s release, her tumultuous personal life flooding the record with raw emotion and coherent album flow.

Of all the nominees for the 2022 Oscars ceremony, Flee is perhaps the best of the least-known films. Though the unique construction of Flee prevents it from having a commercial breakout, this Danish film received some of the most glowing reviews of 2021. As a combination documentary, memoir, and animated feature, Flee is an essential watch as one of the most distinctively crafted films of the 2020s.

The global pandemic altered TV and film production schedules across the planet, but we have yet to see its effects directly addressed in popular media. With a couple of exceptions, like the pandemic-era thriller KIMI and shows like Law & Order that attempt to remain topical, South Park is one of few shows that needs to satirize every possible topic to stay relevant. Though only six episodes, the newest South Park season returns to form, trying to stay on point with their lampooning of various related and unrelated topics.

Earlier in March, HBO Max’s Raised By Wolves ended its second season. Though the first season reviews were far from perfect, the 2020 sci-fi series captivated viewers with intense violence and thoughtful meditations on humanity. With the conclusion of Season 2, Aaron Guzikowski and the Raised by Wolves team prove they have plenty to offer the world in high-level sci-fi concepts. Though there is no word on Season 3, the critical response seems strong enough to warrant a renewal from HBO.
