Why Do Cats Hate Water?
Cats, much like us, have quite diverse personalities. However, there are generally things they like and dislike. For instance, while some cats thoroughly enjoy being petted, others detest even the slightest touch. One thing that all cats undoubtedly love is sleep.
What cats despise, even hate, is water. If you've ever tried to wash your cat, you've probably seen firsthand how much they detest it.
So, why don't cats like water?
Why do cats hate water?

If you're a cat owner, we're sure the image we're about to describe is not unfamiliar to you. Your beloved feline, who usually adores spending time with you, can suddenly become your worst enemy when bath time rolls around. They will do everything in their power to escape the dreaded bath.
Domestic cats go to great lengths to avoid getting wet. Observing this, behaviorists have rolled up their sleeves and proposed some theories on why cats despise water. The first theory is that cats evolved in dry climates and had minimal exposure to rivers or lakes. Therefore, cats are not accustomed to water (excluding drinking water) and tend to avoid things they are unfamiliar with.
Another reason is that water can damage their fur. As you may know, cats spend a significant portion of their day grooming themselves. For them, maintaining clean and well-groomed fur is of utmost importance. Hence, they are not fans of wet fur. Moreover, wet fur slows them down and makes them easier prey (even if they are just lounging at home).
Another understandable reason is the discomfort caused by water getting into their ears. Cats' ears have a rather intricate structure, and water entering them can be quite bothersome. In essence, the unique lifestyle of cats crumbles the moment they come into contact with water.
What about cats that enjoy playing with water?

Certain breeds of cats, such as the Van Cat, Bengal Cat, and Maine Coon, are less afraid of water than others, and they even sometimes enjoy swimming. The reason these breeds are fond of water is due to their fur being more water-resistant compared to others.
Moreover, many cats take pleasure in playing with running or dripping water. This is because they are intrigued by the movements and sounds of the water. These sounds can trigger their instinctual hunting drive. Cats that only wet their paws seem to derive great pleasure from this.
So, it's not something you've done that the cats enjoy, but rather something they've done themselves :)
