In a project involving students, families, and volunteers, over 8,000 PET bottles, which cause significant pollution when discarded into the environment, were collected and repurposed.

These gathered PET bottles were tightly packed with plastic bags and packaging waste, transforming them into high-density 'eco-bricks.' As a result, not only were the bottles repurposed, but thousands of tons of flexible plastic waste that could harm the environment were also effectively disposed of.

The eco-bricks that were prepared were utilized in wall construction by being placed within special net structures in the construction area.

Subsequently, they were entirely concealed with cement and plaster. Once the construction was completed, there were no traces of bottles on the walls from the outside, giving the building the appearance of a traditional structure. To ensure the building's durability, reinforced concrete continued to be used in the foundation, columns, and beams.

This initiative was carried out under the "Bottle Schools" program, spearheaded by the non-profit organization Hug It Forward.

Since its implementation across Guatemala in 2009, this method has led to the construction of a total of 125 schools in rural areas.

The project, which turns the process of waste collection and material preparation into a collective social activity, not only instills environmental awareness in children, but also ensures that rural communities gain access to modern and safe educational spaces.
