The Formula That Rejuvenates the Brain by 13 Years!
What would you say if we told you that it's possible to turn back your brain's biological clock? A study presented at the Federation of European Neuroscience Societies (FENS) conference shows that your brain can stay a full 13 years younger than your biological age. Moreover, our strongest weapon against aging is 'learning a new language'.
Here are the details.
Every New Language Means Extra Youth
The research, conducted with a broad group of participants from Spain, Chile, Argentina, and Ireland, quantitatively proved the impact of language learning on the cellular structure of the brain. When compared to those who speak only one language, the brains of bilingual individuals remain on average 6 years younger.
If the number of languages spoken increases to three, this difference rises to 7 years. The truly surprising part of the research emerges in multilingual (polyglot) individuals: the brains of people who can actively speak four different languages perform a full 13 years younger compared to their calendar age.
Dr. Amoruso Warns: "The Issue is Not Just Numbers, It's Depth"
The lead name in the research, Dr. Lucia Amoruso from the Basque Center on Cognition, Brain and Language (BCBL) in Spain, emphasizes that this miraculous effect is not limited to 'how many languages you know'.
Golden Rule: Start Early, Speak Fluently
Dr. Amoruso explains their findings with these words:
'The issue is not as simple as a 'switch on-off' situation of whether you are bilingual or not. This is a spectrum. Your proficiency (fluency) in the language you speak and how early you started learning that language are the main factors that delay brain aging. So, the depth and duration of your language experience are very critical.'
A Shield that Starts at School and Lasts a Lifetime
Dr. Amoruso's findings show that; the earlier we introduce a new language into our lives and the more we deepen in that language, the stronger the neurological shield our brain builds against aging.
The scientific world now advocates that language learning should be vigorously supported from school desks onwards at any age, for 'brain health' alone, in addition to its social and cultural benefits.
