Stray Fireworks Destroy 20 Years of Art: Painter Murat Melih Özen's Studio Burned Down in Istanbul
The unbelievable incident that took place in Beyoglu, Istanbul, once again highlighted the danger of fireworks used in celebrations. A firework launched after the Kasimpasa-Trabzonspor match not only burned down a house, but also turned the entire 20-year art collection of 47-year-old painter Murat Melih Ozen to ashes.
Here are the details
The Celebration Turned Into A Disaster!
In the first week of the Super League, after the KasımpaşaTrabzonspor match, a firework allegedly ignited by fans entered the fourth floor of a five-story building in Evliya Çelebi Neighborhood. The flames quickly engulfed the apartment. The life of Murat Melih Özen, who also used his home as an art workshop, changed at that moment.
"Destruction Comes with the "Your House is on Fire" Call
The unfortunate artist, who was in Dalaman to visit his mother at the time of the fire, received the bad news from his neighbors. Shaken by the question, 'Your house is on fire, are you inside?', Özen had to learn about the destruction of years of effort from afar, helplessly.
The losses in the fire were not just material:
Paintings that had been worked on for months and were waiting to be exhibited in a new exhibition. Professional brushes, paints, and an easel of high sentimental value.
Song lyrics and music equipment left from the artist's past professional music studio. Irreplaceable photos and special memories belonging to Özen's deceased father.
"I Gave My Soul to My Paintings"
Özen, struggling to put into words the destruction he experienced, was reflecting the common feeling of all artists with his rebellion:
'The paintings of a painter with 20 years of experience were massacred. I gave my soul to my paintings. In the heart of the city, some people will have fun, wreak havoc and continue their lives as if nothing happened... This is not fair at all. I want my losses, my effort back.'
