New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani Revealed to Hold a Symbolic Stake in Oviedo
It has come to light that Zohran Mamdani, the newly elected mayor of New York, is one of the shareholders of Real Oviedo, a team from Spain's La Liga.
At 34, Mamdani, who has been the youngest mayor of the city since 1892, had previously disclosed that he bought a share from the team, known for nurturing players like Michu and Santi Cazorla, back in 2012.
A post made by Mamdani in 2012 on X (formerly known as Twitter) has resurfaced. In that post, he stated, 'Just bought a share, I'm probably the first Oviedo shareholder living in Maine.'
Following the post going viral once again, the club responded with the message: 'Congratulations on your victory. New York has now taken on a much more Oviedo blue hue.'

He purchased a share for 9.5 pounds, thus becoming a representative shareholder.

Football enthusiasts from all around the globe had rallied to support the Spanish team during its economic hardship.
Oviedo, battling in the third league, was on the brink of closure. The team aimed to raise a total of 1.6 million pounds by offering its shares at a price of 9.50 pounds each.
Among the 20,000 participants in this campaign was Mamdani. Other notable figures included Michu, Real Madrid player Juan Mata, and Spencer Owen, the owner of YouTuberHashtag United.
The club also received an investment from Mexican billionaire Carlos Slim.
Thanks to this solidarity, Oviedo, which was on the verge of closure, managed to stay afloat and for the first time since the 2000-2001 season, it ascended to La Liga.
Mamdani, an Arsenal fan, had also voiced his criticism about the ticket prices at the World Cup.

In addition to being the first Muslim and South Asian mayor of New York, Mamdani identifies himself as a 'democratic socialist'.
Having grown up in Uganda, Mamdani is an Arsenal fan. He confessed to a Sky News reporter after his electoral victory that he stays up late every year to watch the live broadcasts on Sky at the end of the transfer season.
The newly elected mayor also criticized FIFA's implementation of 'dynamic pricing' on tickets for the 2026 World Cup.
MetLife Stadium in New Jersey, home to the New York Jets, will host the final of the tournament to be held in the United States, Mexico, and Canada.
