For a generation of Turkish viewers, Sezer Güvenirgil is Şehriye Hanım, the mother of Zeliş in the late-1990s TV series Bücür Cadı, remembered for her embroidered headscarf, fringe and dark hair. Long before Bücür Cadı, Sezer Güvenirgil made her name through beauty pageants and Yeşilçam films.
Sezer Güvenirgil's family moved from Romania to Istanbul after the Second World War. In 1966 she came third in the Miss Turkey contest organised by Milliyet, then won a contest held by Ses magazine, which opened the door to cinema.
From the big screen to music
Sezer Güvenirgil made her film debut in Hulki Saner's Beş Fındıkçı Gelin and soon shared the screen with Cüneyt Arkın, Yılmaz Güney and Ekrem Bora. She also appeared in Zeki Müren's film Kâtip. In the late 1970s she turned to music as well, releasing her first 45 in 1978 and the album Mutluluğun Bedeli in 1982.
The role that stuck
Her most memorable TV role came in 1999 with Bücür Cadı. Playing Şehriye Hanım, the wife of Köfteci Abbas, portrayed by Yunus Bülbül, earned Sezer Güvenirgil the nickname 'Şehriye Teyze' (Auntie Şehriye) among a generation of viewers.
